How Stem Cell Technology is Revolutionizing Animal Healthcare in India

"How Stem Cell Technology is Revolutionizing Animal Healthcare in India"

India’s First Animal Stem Cell BioBank Opens at NIAB, Hyderabad

On a warm afternoon in Hyderabad, the National Institute of Animal Biotechnology (NIAB) saw an unusual gathering - scientists, veterinarians, and government officials all under one roof. The reason was historic. Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, cut the ribbon to open India’s very first Animal Stem Cell BioBank.

This facility, tucked away inside NIAB’s modern campus, is designed to collect, preserve, and study stem cells from different animal species. It’s not just a lab with freezers and microscopes - it’s meant to be a long-term resource for researchers across India. The idea is simple but powerful: store living cell samples today so future scientists can use them to treat diseases, improve breeding, and even help endangered species.

Dr. Singh called it “a step towards positioning India as a leader in animal biotechnology.” In his short speech, he also pointed out that animal health is tied closely to human health, especially in a country where livestock supports millions of rural families.

Walking through the facility, you can see cold storage units humming quietly, lab technicians in white coats moving with purpose, and a few visitors whispering in excitement. Each preserved sample could represent years of work, and maybe - one day - a breakthrough cure for an animal disease that currently has no solution.

This BioBank is expected to speed up work in veterinary science. For example, stem cells from a healthy cow could be used to help treat another with a rare immune disorder. In some cases, genetic diversity can be preserved even if a species’ numbers are falling in the wild. It’s the kind of forward-looking science that, until now, often required sending samples abroad.

By keeping this capability in India, NIAB hopes to make research faster, cheaper, and more collaborative. The Minister’s visit ended with a brief interaction with the scientists, where he urged them to “think big” and aim for global impact.

The launch might not have made front-page headlines nationwide, but for India’s scientific community, it’s a big deal - and possibly the beginning of many more firsts in animal biotechnology.
